CO2 emissions
Due to the high demand for fossil fuels large amounts of CO2 are released into the atmosphere every day. This inevitably leads to environmental degradation and negative effects on the climate. Switching to more energy efficient and environmentally friendly processes, however, is often very cost intensive, and planning and implementation are generally lengthy processes. Until the transformation to climate neutral methods is not fully achieved, CO2 will continue to be emitted worldwide.
Sustainability in biotech
Fossil fuels such as gas and oil are not only essential as energy sources, but also important as raw materials in the chemical industry, for example for plastics. Here, too, the switch to supposedly more sustainable alternatives such as bioplastics cannot be implanted without compromise, since valuable foodstuffs, such as corn have to be used for their production. While this takes a step towards sustainable production (SDG 12), it would also mean a step backwards in achieving the goal of sustainable nutrition and zero hunger (SDG 2).
Our Solution
We, as Cyan Cycle, are creating a system that can be readily used by existing CO2-emitting production sites to bind CO2 as biomass before it is released into the atmosphere. With the use of microalgae, we are developing a biological carbon capture system that, unlike carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies, does not require storage solutions, but instead makes the biomass produced directly available as a valuable intermediate product. The biomass cultivated in our reactor can then be used as a sustainable feedstock in further biotechnological processes with the goal of producing carbon neutral products such as bioplastics – without the use of foods. As such, it is our goal to contribute to sustainable production by implementing our technology to recycle CO2.
